Great Lakes Sand Dunes and Wetlands
About Great Lakes Wetlands

Functional relationships exist between coastal wetlands and freshwater sand dunes. Although sand dunes themselves are fragile, they provide shelter for the inland wetlands buffering the wetlands from severe storm energy from across the Great Lakes. The wetlands are a source of great biodiversity and are a critical component of the hydrologic cycle.
