U.S. Climate Report (
http://1.usa.gov/23NfgBc), the month was warmer and drier than average for the contiguous United States. A record-breaking snowstorm impacted the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast during the month. And, the contiguous U.S. drought footprint contracted to its lowest extent since 2010.
The January precipitation total for the contiguous U.S. was 2.03 inches, 0.28 inch below the 20th century average, the 36th driest January on record. Beneficial precipitation was observed in the West, slightly improving long-term drought conditions. #StateOfClimate

Global Climate Report (
http://1.usa.gov/1Llc6Jn), the globally averaged temperature over land and ocean surfaces for January 2016 was the highest for the month since record keeping began in 1880. Also, global ocean surface temperatures were warmest on record for the month, and land surface temperatures were second warmest.
