NYSG’s updating of the New York Aquaculture Industry status report supports New York’s opportunity to become an industry leader

Stony Brook, NY, March 23, 2023 - Since the “New York Aquaculture Industry: Status, Constraints, and Opportunities” report was published in 2004, no other encompassing documents had been produced to update the status of New York’s aquaculture industry. Such a document can inform efforts to support the growth and sustainability of a vibrant New York freshwater and marine aquaculture industry.

Over the course of 2021 and 2022, New York Sea Grant (NYSG) collaborated with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, Lake Champlain Sea Grant, Cornell University, and the Center for Aquatic Animal Research and Management to produce an updated paper capturing the past, present, and potential future for aquaculture in New York. A team of six authors collected information from various stakeholders, older reports, and scientific publications to write a thoroughly updated report on the status of the aquaculture industry in New York State.

In addition to providing an overview history of aquaculture globally and nationally, and an in-depth history of New York’s freshwater and marine aquaculture to the present, the New York Aquaculture Industry: Status, Updates and Opportunities report published in 2022 highlights knowledge gaps and recommendations related to regulations, workforce, education, and extension to better support New York’s aquaculture industry.

New York State is in a position where proactive and collaborative efforts are needed to move NY aquaculture forward with the potential to become an industry leader nationally. NYSG has the capacity to support the industry through its diverse programming and partnerships.

New York Sea Grant (NYSG), a cooperative program of Cornell University and the State University of New York (SUNY), is one of 34 university-based programs under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Sea Grant College Program.

Since 1971, NYSG has represented a statewide network of integrated research, education and extension services promoting coastal community economic vitality, environmental sustainability and citizen awareness and understanding about the State’s marine and Great Lakes resources.
